Navigation and mobile optimisation FAQs

What is the right number of categories for your top level navigation?

This depends on your product range, but 5 to 8 is usually a good amount. Too many top level categories can be overwhelming, and not enough categories means too much friction – too many clicks for your customers to find what they want.

How do I plan web navigation?

There’s no right or wrong – you can do it very quickly and easily in a word doc, with main bullet points and sub bullet points, and so on. Or you can draw a diagram or flow chart, which would look a little like an upside down tree.
