The idea for this guide came about because retail crime is on the rise. There have been increases in shoplifting and more brazen and violent crimes, which is of great concern. We want to provide our members with the information they need when crime strikes, and to have strategies in place to protect themselves, their employees, and their property.

This guide it is intended to be a ‘one-stop shop’ that contains everything a retailer needs to know about retail crime. The advice is generic and intended to be tailored to the needs of an individual business. Crime prevention will be different for each store depending on its size, the products being sold and its location.

It is divided into four sections. The first covers the bigger picture strategies retailers can put in place to manage the risks of crime. Being properly insured, having good health and safety policies and robust staff procedures in place will help you deal with these risks well before crime takes place. The second section covers general crime prevention advice. The third section has practical steps you can take to prevent crime, from simply thinking about the layout of your store, to good stock and asset management, and keeping yourself and employees safe. The final section gives you the information you need if a crime has taken place.
