Changes to product labelling requirements announced this morning is a win for both retailers and consumers, Retail NZ Chief Executive, Carolyn Young, says.
Regulations Minister, David Seymour, has announced a digital labelling standard will be developed to allow Kiwi companies to confidently adopt them, as well as news that product labelling requirements for over-the-counter medicines will be aligned with Australia.
“These changes will make it easier for exporters and importers of products in Aotearoa New Zealand, including retailers,” says Ms Young, who heads the peak body representing New Zealand retailers.
“Digital labelling is the new global standard for conveying some product information, rather than having to print it on packaging in the languages of the various markets it is sold to. It also means that information can be updated in real-time if things change, for example, if the country where an ingredient is sourced changes due to availability.”
While digital labels do not replace the need for physical labels, this new standard will make it clear what information can be conveyed on a digital label, freeing up space on product packaging for the most important product details.
“Digital labels are being used in markets right across the world and allows retailers – and consumers – access to a greater depth of information that can be useful for deciding what products to stock and purchase,” Ms Young says. “It’s also important New Zealand is not left behind as we move towards a more digital future.”
Carolyn Young says the adoption of Australian labelling requirements for over-the-counter medicines is also a positive step for our country’s pharmacies.
“Manufacturers and importers of non-prescription medicines that our households use regularly will no longer have to re-label those specifically for the New Zealand market, cutting costs and making our country a more attractive market to be in.” she says.
Ms Young says the changes announced today will be beneficial for both retailers and shoppers, and ensures New Zealand is moving in the right direction when it comes to the future of product labelling.
