FAQ

Entries for all award categories are now closed.

The awards are free to enter and are open to all online and physical retail stores operating in New Zealand.  You do not need to be a Retail NZ member to enter.  You can enter multiple categories but need to complete the entry form for each category addressing the questions for that award.

1. Don’t wait until the last moment to submit your entry. It’s important to invest time and thought into crafting a clear and informative entry. The effort you put in will increase your chances of success! Remember, the deadline is Sunday, 31 May 2026 so be sure to submit your entries well before then.

2. Our categories come with specific criteria for you to review before and during the entry process. Be sure to read the criteria thoroughly and address each question accordingly.

3. Clearly describe your achievements and support them with relevant data. When preparing your entry, keep in mind that facts are more convincing than mere statements. Since all judges are bound by confidentiality, providing detailed numbers, facts and objective evidence will make your entry stand out and capture their attention. Don’t assume the judges know anything about your business and use plain language.

4. Provide context by outlining the background, rationale, objectives, process, execution and results of your work.

5. What sets you apart from others? Highlight any new approaches or innovations you introduced. We are interested in examples of businesses and individuals who have discovered more effective ways of achieving results. Most categories in the Retail Awards emphasise accomplishments from the past year. Be sure to showcase any novel strategies you implemented and describe how they differed from your competitors’ practices.

6. Use of AI – we all use it, but please keep in mind that judges will have multiple entries to read through so keep your information short and succinct. E.g., condensing what you have to say into two paragraphs rather than a page of AI waffle.

How we judge the Retail NZ Awards

Retail NZ takes the integrity of the Awards and the judging process extremely seriously. Our judging framework is designed to be fair, transparent and consistent, and to recognise excellence across New Zealand’s retail sector.

All entries are assessed by an independent panel of experienced retail leaders and subject matter experts, using a structured scoring process aligned to the published award criteria.

Our judging principles

The Retail NZ Awards are judged according to the following principles:

  • Fairness and objectivity
  • Consistency across all entries within each category
  • Respect for the confidentiality of entrants and their information
  • Transparency and integrity in decision making

Judges are required to assess each entry on its merits, without bias or prejudice, and to apply the published criteria consistently across all submissions.

Judge responsibilities and confidentiality

Before accessing or reviewing any award entries, all judges must formally agree to and sign the Retail NZ Awards Judges Terms and Conditions.

As part of this process, judges commit to:

  • Acting impartially and to the best of their ability
  • Declaring any actual or potential conflicts of interest and stepping aside from judging any affected entries
  • Maintaining strict confidentiality over all entry information, discussions and scoring
  • Not sharing, copying, reproducing or discussing entries or judging materials with anyone outside the authorised Retail NZ team
  • Not using any information obtained through judging for personal, professional or commercial benefit
  • Only accessing the submissions during the judging process (submissions are only viewable during the judging period via a secure portal, and can no longer be accessed after scoring is completed).

These confidentiality obligations continue indefinitely beyond the conclusion of the Awards.

This process is essential to protecting entrant information, maintaining trust in the Awards, and upholding best practice within Retail NZ and the wider retail industry.

Conflicts of interest

Retail NZ recognises that many judges, board members and industry leaders are actively involved in the retail sector. Any actual or perceived conflicts of interest must be declared before judging begins.

Where a conflict exists, the judge will not assess that entry category and will be recused from any related discussions or scoring. This ensures that all entries are evaluated fairly and independently.

Scoring and decision making

Entries are assessed against a defined scoring matrix that reflects the specific criteria of each award category. Judges score entries individually before participating in moderated discussions to ensure consistency and balance.

Final decisions are made collectively, based on scores, discussion and alignment to the award criteria.
