The further rollout of Facial Recognition Technology (FRT) to all Bunnings’ New Zealand stores is a reassurance to its staff and customers that their safety is paramount, Retail NZ Chief Executive, Carolyn Young, says.
Bunnings announced today that following a successful trial of the technology in the North Island, it has rolled out FRT to its stores nationwide.
“Retail is a unique industry, in that while each store or franchise is a private business, it needs to function as a public space with easy, unrestricted access to be successful,” Carolyn Young says.
“Unfortunately, we are seeing instances of aggressive, abusive and violent behaviour from customers continue to increase, often by repeat offenders. Facial Recognition Technology, when used fairly and accurately, is one of the main things retailers can implement to help keep their staff safe,” she says.
“We have also seen FRT used successfully across other retailers in their stores, and this technology gives retailers another tool in their toolbox to help in the prevention of retail crime. However, it is not a silver bullet and should be used in conjunction with other crime prevention devices.”
Carolyn Young says some Retail NZ members have seen success in using a combination of practices alongside FRT, including good customer service, having good sight lines in store, active CCTV monitoring, training staff in de-escalation techniques and building strong relationships with local police and other retailers in the area.
“FRT will not solve retail crime on its own, but it is a powerful and effective instrument that can be used to enhance the safety of staff and customers in retail stores,” Ms Young says.
