The average retail wage has risen to $30.64 per hour, up 3% on last year, according to Retail NZ’s latest Wages Guide.

This aligns with the 2.8% average wage growth across the retail sector in 2024.

The wage growth comes despite sluggish revenue growth across the sector.

“Retailers are continuing to battle low consumer confidence and slow sales. But wages are increasing at a rate faster than growth in revenue and it’s pleasing that the average wage remains well above both the minimum wage of $23.50 and the living wage of $27.80,” Retail NZ Chief Executive Carolyn Young says.

The 2025 Wages Guide covers 27 roles, ranging from frontline sales assistants and delivery drivers to back-office roles in finance, digital, logistics and store management. On average, large national retailers pay higher wages than smaller businesses operating from only one or two stores.

Retail employers continue to offer a range of non-salary benefits. This year’s survey shows that 90% of employers provide additional perks with 56% offer in-store discounts or subsidised food and clothing, and 45% offering flexible working arrangements.

Others provide bonuses, commissions or professional development support.

“The 230,000 people working in retail provide an essential service to New Zealanders,” Ms Young says.

The Wages Guide reinforces the message that retail offers diverse and well-paid career opportunities far beyond the shop floor.
