If an employee’s health is impacting their ability to perform their duties, you can ask them to consent to an independent medical assessment. If the employee agrees this, you can use the medical assessment to get a better understanding of their fitness for work, prospects or timeframes for returning to their full duties, and recommendations for accommodations at work to support their recovery and wellbeing. In some instances, an assessment may be used to determine if dismissal for medical incapacity may be considered.
