A Performance Improvement Plan is a formal process for managing underperforming employees

If your employee’s performance hasn’t improved with informal feedback, you can initiate a formal Performance Improvement Plan, after consulting with them and informing them of your concerns. Updated August 2025.

A PIP is a formal process, and therefore is subject to fair process requirements under New Zealand legislation.
